Autism is a journey...
...so what are the next steps?
"While there's no proven cure yet for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), treating ASD early, using school-based programs, and getting proper medical care can greatly reduce ASD symptoms and increases your child's ability to grow and learn new skills" (NIH)
Treatment Services:
Autism intervention plans should be as unique as the child they are suited for. They should be created with the individual in mind, and altered to fit their unique needs. "Intervention can involve behavioral treatments, medicines or both" (Autism Speaks).
Early Intervention:
Early intervention has proven to be crucial. If you are concerned that your child may be on the spectrum, please do not hesitate to see a medical professional so that screening and evaluation may start immediately.
"Early intensive behavioral intervention involves a child's entire family, working closely with a team of professionals. In some early intervention programs, therapists come into the home to deliver services. This can include parent training with the parent leading therapy sessions under the supervision of the therapist. Other programs deliver therapy in a specialized center, classroom or preschool" (Autism Speaks).

Beware:
Be on the look-out for bogus information. Media is full of "cure-alls" and "miracle diets". As a parent or family member, be careful of the sources you choose to trust. Make sure the sites you use are credible and backed with legitimate research. If the source you are using seems questionable, do more research! There are many helpful, legitimate websites and sources out there. A few of those can be found on the "Resources" page on this site.
